What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain Veneers are thin, semi-translucent "shells" or plates" of porcelain that are permanantly bonded to your teeth. While they are not suitable for every patient, Porcelain Veneers are a cosmetic alternative for a variety of dental conditions of the front teeth. Including:

diastemas (spaces between the teeth)

broken or chipped teeth

unsightly, stained or washed out fillings

permantly stained or discolored teeth

misshapen or crooked teeth

What Are The Advantages Of Porcelain Veneers?

At one time, composite(plastic) fillings or crowns were the only available treatment for these conditions. Today, a third alternative is available--Porcelain Veneers. The Advantages may include all of the following considerations:

often Dr. Kinser requires no anesthesia for the patient and the appointment is still painless

only a small amount of tooth structure (if any) is removed during the procedure

a healthy, vital, natural look is achieved with little or no discomfort and you now have your "Perfect Smile"

What Makes Porcelain Veneers Different From Fillings Or Crowns?

A composite filling may be used when only a small amount of tooth structure needs to be replaced or altered. A full crown is indicated when a tooth has had root canal treatment, or when a substantial amount of the entire tooth structure has been lost. A Porcelain Veneer is indicated when the front surface of the tooth and the biting edge need a "face lift".

How Are Porcelain Veneers Done?

The making and placement of Porcelain Veneers requires two seperate appointments--preparation of the teeth and then bonding of the veneers to the teeth.

Preparation: At the preparation appointment, Dr. Kinser will prepare the teeth with margins where the edges of the veneers will meet the teeth. This is to achieve an optimal fit where most of the time you cannot tell where the tooth and veneer meet. An impression is then taken to make an exact replica of you prepared teeth so his lab technician can fabricate the porcelain veneers. Composite, tooth colored temporaries will then be placed so that you will be able to continue with your normal daily activities without any inconvienence to yourself.
Bonding of the Veneers: During the veneering appointment, your teeth are conditioned with a solution to create a perfectly clean surface for optimal bonding strength. The veneers are then bonded into place individually using a tooth colored material to achieve the highest quality aesthetics with a vibrant natural and healthy look.

What To Expect From Your Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers can last for years, depending on how well they are taken care of by the patients.Because veneers are stronger than simple bonding, they are also more resistant to stains and chipping.
You must maintain regular oral hygiene at home, and visit us for routine cleaning and exams. This is to insure that your new veneers will look as good as new.
You should also avoid staining foods and beverages, such as blueberries, cherries, coffee, tea and red wine. Another important point is that oral habits such as nail biting, opening bobby pins and chewing on hard objects could damage your new veneers.
